Outfit Formulas for Summer
Part Two, with six outfits featuring my favorite raffia bags
Dear Reader,
As summer settles in, I find myself reaching for one accessory more than any other: a raffia bag. It’s become a bit of a staple this time of year because it instantly grounds an outfit, adding just enough texture to make even the simplest look feel considered.
The formula is simple: just add a raffia bag. It’s one of those pieces that seems to work with almost everything I wear in the summer, from crisp cottons and linen to denim and silk. If an outfit feels like it’s missing something, nine times out of ten, it’s the raffia bag that finishes it. Below are six outfits built around this one easy styling trick. Hope you find something you love.

Look One
While browsing Instagram last week, I came across this image from a new-to-me brand, Nuisette. It was an instant screenshot.
What caught my eye was the contrast between the long, flowy dress and the more grounded accessories. It struck that perfect balance of effortless and practical. (The ponytail certainly doesn’t hurt either.) I immediately ordered the pictured Nuisette dress, along with the SKALL one below, to try. Planning to wear it just like this.
Look Two
I couldn’t resist including this TWP raffia bag. The unexpected color blocking makes it feel fresh while still working with just about everything. The rest of the outfit is intentionally simple—relaxed drawstring cargo pants and a collared short-sleeve sweater. It lets the bag do what it does best: add texture, interest, and make the whole look feel complete.
Look Three
I recently joined a weekly evening mahjong group, and this is exactly what I’d want to wear to play after a day of running errands around town. The shirt and jeans both have relaxed, slightly oversized silhouettes, creating an easy shape that’s comfortable without sacrificing style. Nothing is clinging to my body, and the wrinkles that will undoubtedly develop during the day will be welcome. The structured striped raffia bag brings everything together, and I couldn’t resist adding the purple sandals for a little unexpected color.
Look Four
Not all raffia bags have to be light and beachy. This rich chocolate-brown one from Sezane adds warmth to a classic black-and-white pairing, giving the outfit a softer feel. Finish the look with bright yellow sandals for a summery, fun touch.
By the way, I’m especially intrigued by the new cotton/silk sheer cargo pants from DONNI. I haven’t tried them yet, but I love the idea of playing with sheer textures. Let me know if you’ve already given them a go.
Look Five
Of all the looks featured in this letter, this is the one I want to wear the most. Jeans + a t-shirt + a raffia bag. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself editing outfits more than adding to them. A great white T-shirt, classic denim (the ones below are from OSSOU, and I can’t wait to try them), olive sandals, and a timeless tan raffia bag are all this look needs. Every piece earns its place.
Look Six
Last month, I was on a Metro-North train from Connecticut to New York City, and I spotted a very chic woman wearing red pants, a brown sweater, and a raffia bag. Later that night, as I scrolled on stories, I realized I’d seen Meredith Melling (co-founder of La Ligne).
I made a mental note of her outfit, and as I finished putting these looks together, I remembered how easy and chill she looked in red + brown + raffia. Below is my version of her look.
